How To Pitch…

A few ground rules.

  • Ensure you are 100% comfortable pitching!
  • Don’t break any NDAs or leak anything.
  • If you are in a team ensure you run it by them.
  • Don’t pitch anyone else’s game.
  • Double check before posting!
  • Don’t spam.
  • You can pitch “once”, per game, per major social platform. Ideally you’d want to tailor the pitch to match the platform you are pitching on. As what will work better on one, might not work as well on others.
  • Once you have pitched please only share with threads etc by posting the link to your existing pitch (in other words please don’t just copy and paste your pitch multiple times everywhere).

Pitching is an art form in itself and we can’t tell you what is going to work, because there are so many factors to why gets noticed… however what we can do is offer you some tips to help you craft better Pitches.

  • MOST IMPORTANT: Tag your live pitch with #PitchYaGame
  • Know your audience, and ensure you follow platform etiquette.
  • When writing your pitch, you want to hook the person reading it, don’t bore them with too many fine details!
    • This is a first person game about a dog. You play as a dog, doing dog-like things.
    • VS Be the dog you’ve always wanted to be. See life through their eyes; Dig, Scratch, Bury those Bones!
  • Try tailoring your pitch based on the stage of development you are at
    • If you are looking for support identify the stage you are at and potentially who you are looking for, this could be done by turning your original pitch into a thread.
  • Speak to your audience. Who do you want to stop and notice your elevator pitch? Does your tweet get it across?
  • Use accompanying hashtags but best to not over do them
  • Pitching to Industry (publishers, investors / media)
    • e.g. hashtags like #GameDev, #IndieDev, #IndieGame
  • Pitching to Players:
    • e.g genre hashtags like #rpg, #fps, #VideoGame
  • Structure is important, make them concise, and easier to scan read.
  • Less is often more
    • some of the most successful pitches since we launched have a strong video or a striking gif with a catchy quote; experiment)
  • Try different approaches. What worked for one might not work for another
  • Try to stand out from the crowd.
  • Don’t forget to add media.
    • videos are easily the strongest form (don’t forget to add audio + captions etc)
    • followed by gifs
    • followed by images
  • Add a call to action. Anything specific you would like people to do? i.e. check out the demo etc.
  • Include a link (if applicable) – replies are diluted and don’t receive as much engagement.
    • Wishlist: link to Steam Page
    • play demo: link to Itchio Page
    • buy game: link to Store Page etc
  • Try not to over-sell. Allow the words and accompanying art / gif to do that, it will come across more natural.
  • Have fun.
